World Cup 2022 Qualifiers – CONMEBOL

By Jake Football, Sports Comments Off on World Cup 2022 Qualifiers – CONMEBOL

The qualifiers for nations in the South American Football Confederation are straightforward. There are only 10 competing nations. Qualifying nations will be decided by round-robin fixtures with each nation playing each other in home and away fixtures.

The nations finishing in the top four places secure automatic World Cup qualification. The country that finishes fifth proceeds into an inter-confederation play off fixture. This play off fixture will be against the fourth round AFC (African Football Confederation)winner.

Brazil and Argentina in a league of their own

Two gameweeks remain in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, but Brazil and Argentina have already decided their fate. Sailing clear from the rest of the pack, both countries can take their foot off the gas. Both coaches may decide to experiment with new ideas or tactics in their final group games, ahead of the World Cup

Brazil lead the way on an impressive 39 points from 15 games, 4 ahead of Argentina sitting comfortably in second.

Even though Brazil and Argentina have played one less fixture than the rest of the group, they remain clear. After health officials stormed the pitch during Brazil and Argentina’s September clash, the game was cancelled. FIFA have yet to decide when the tie will be played. FIFA have confirmed that the game will have to be replayed, even though it won’t affect the placings.

Highly competitive for the remaining places

After the leading duo, the rest of the group looks highly competitive with only 3 points separating fourth and sixth. Ecuador sit in third, 3 points clear of fourth. Ecuador will be looking to cement their place in this year’s World Cup with a win against Paraguay at Estadio Antonio Aranda.

Five nations could still earn themselves a spot in the Qatar World Cup. Only Bolivia, Paraguay, and Venezuela cannot finish in the top four placings. Technically, Bolivia still have a chance of finishing fifth. By doing so, Bolivia would gain a spot in the Inter-Confederation play off. Although, the odds look stacked against, even if they win their last two fixtures by a considerable goal margin. Bolivia would also need everything else to go their way… the task looks almost impossible but you never know!
