Here are the poker hand rankings from strongest to weakest:
-
Royal flush
This is the highest-ranking poker hand, so you will definitely be hoping to receive a royal flush to wash out the other players at the poker table. A royal flush consists of five consecutive cards of the same suit in order of value from 10 through to Ace.
-
Straight flush
A straight flush consists of five cards of the same suit in sequence, for example, 10, 9, 8,7, and 6 of diamonds. This poker hand can only be beaten by a player who has a royal flush or another straight flush with higher-ranking cards.
-
Four of a kind
A four-of-a-kind poker hand refers to the same card in all four suits. The fifth card in this poker hand is referred to as the kicker. In the instance where there is a tie, the highest four-of-a-kind wins. In community card games where players have the same four of a kind, the player with the highest fifth card or kicker wins.
-
Full house
A full house poker hand comprises the same value card in three different suits (AAA three of a kind) and a separate pair of the same rank card in two different suits.
-
Flush
This poker hand refers to five cards of the same suit in any order. If there is a tie at the poker table, the player with the highest-ranked card wins. If deemed necessary, the second-highest, third-highest, fourth-highest, and fifth-highest cards can be used to break the tie. However, if all five cards are the same rank, the pot is split. In poker, the suit cannot be used to break a tie.
-
Straight
A straight is five cards in sequence, and it does not have to be in the same suit. With a straight, an Ace can rank as either high (above a King) or low (below a 2).
-
Three of a kind
Three cards of the same rank in different suits and two unrelated side cards. If there is a tie, the highest-ranking three-of-a-kind wins. If players have the same three-of-a-kind, the highest side card, and if required, the second-highest side card wins.
-
Two Pairs
Two cards of a matching rank and another two cards of a different matching rank, as well as one side card. If there is a tie at the poker table, the highest pair wins. If players have the same highest pair, the highest second pair wins. If both players have two identical pairs, the highest side card wins.
-
Pair
A pair in poker refers to two cards of the same rank in different suits, another two cards of a different matching rank, and one side card. The highest pair wins if there is a tie at the poker table. If players have the same highest pair, the highest second pair wins. If both players have two identical pairs, the highest second card wins.
-
High card
We’ve reached the lowest rank in poker. Of course, this means it would kick into effect if you haven’t made any of the above hands. You would have to rely on the highest-ranked card in your hand.
