National League All-Star vs American League All-Star (Wednesday 00:01 UTC)
The 2023 MLB All-Star Game will take place at the T-Mobile Park Seattle, home of the Mariners. Major League Baseball has announced the full All-Star rosters for the American League and National League, adding the pitchers and reserves to a vote by fans of starting lineups that were introduced on June 29th. This will be the 93rd Midsummer Classic, with the first being in 1933. A second yearly game was played for four seasons only, from 1959 to 1962. The only years where the Classic was not held were 1945 and 2020.
This year’s rosters include perennial All-Stars such as Shohei Ohani, Nolan Arenado, Salvador Perez, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. The tally will also feature a swathe of new players. There are 31 first-time All-Stars total this year, 17 of whom are from the National League. We can expect the loudest cheers to be for Castillo and Kirby, who will be playing at their home ground. As well as Julio Rodríguez, who was the runner-up to Juan Soto in last season’s Derby last summer at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles.
In addition 31 of the All-Stars are internationally-born, 19 on the AL roster and 12 on the NL roster. Nations who contributed to this total are the Dominican Republic (11 All-Stars), Cuba (eight), Venezuela (six), Curaçao (two), Japan (two), Canada (two) and Puerto Rico (one). This sets a national record for Cuba.
Several new additions were made to the rosters over the weekend:
On the AL side: Minnesota’s Pablo López was added, replacing Toronto’s Kevin Gausman; Blue Jays righty Jordan Romano was added, replacing Houston’s Framber Valdez.
On the NL side: Mets starter Kodai Senga was added, replacing the Cubs’ Marcus Stroman; Giants righty Alex Cobb was added, replacing Braves righty Bryce Elder; Phillies reliever Craig Kimbrel was added, replacing Milwaukee’s Devin Williams; Brewers righty Corbin Burnes was added, replacing Atlanta’s Spencer Strider.
As ever with modern Classic matches there won’t be much between the teams, and this is shown in the Money Line. The National League currently stands at 1.970, while the American is at 1.917. Pete ‘The Polar Bear’ Alonso will be looking to make it three in four competitions, after claiming a 2nd consecutive title in 2021 at Coors Field following his 2019 win at Progressive Field in Cleveland. We’ll be on for a great show!
