Brazilian giants Gremio to bounce straight back?
The teams promoted into the Serie A for the 2022/23 campaign were Botafoga, Goias, Coritiba and Avai FC. The teams heading the other direction with relegation to the second division of Brazilian football included a huge surprise in Brazilian giants Gremio FC. Gremio were joined by Bahia, Sport Recife and Chapacoense. The biggest surprise was the relegation of Gremio FC, a stalwart of Brazilian football with a huge fan base and past success, becoming the Brazilian champions just 4 years ago. The Gremio fan base will be hoping for a quick bounce back, straight back into the Serie A where they belong.
Botafogo, a historic side based in Brazil’s capital Rio de Janeiro were the first side to gain promotion to Brazil’s premier division, with a 2-1 victory over Operario. Botafogo went on to win the Serie B by 5 points, ahead of nearest rivals Goias.
Atletico Mineiro secure second Serie A title
Atletico Mineiro made easy work of securing the club’s second Brazilian Serie A title, finishing the campaign 13 points clear of their nearest rivals Flamengo. Atletico look sure to have another successful league run, aiming to claim back-to-back titles.
